If man makes a move across the country, man’s best friend should go with him. However, some cities love furry friends more than others, but Austin ranks as the top city in Texas in for dogs. Men’sHealth recently compared 100 cities in the nation by the per capita number of dog parks, dog-friendly apartments, vets, animal shelters, pet stores and services, along with percentage of owners. Additionally, they incorporated information about state laws against animal cruelty, dog fighting, and puppy mills. Austin ranked highest in these categories out of the other Texas states, placing the crown of puppy love on the head of the capital.
A benefit of living in such a city includes the abundance of dog-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating. In addition to dining alongside your pup, some locations like Another Broken Egg Café (3016 Guadalupe) will include a treat and water for leashed, well behaved pooches. Other dog friendly restaurants include Austin Java Company at 1206 Parkway, Cuatros at 1004 24th Street, Casa de Luz on 1701 Toomey Road, and Red River Café at 2912 Medical Arts.
Additionally, Austin’s beautiful sunny weather and clear skies offer the perfect place to play with your pet in a local park. The capital welcomes dogs in many local parks such as Town Lake, Zilker Park, and Bastrop state park. However, if your canine prefers the freedom of a leash-free park, you should check out Auditorium Shores, Red Bul Isle, Walnut Creek District, or Zilker Park’s Off-Leash area.
After a play day in the park, you can even bring your pup on a shopping spree! Stores such as Lowe’s at 6400 Brodie Lane, Half-Price Books, PetSmart, Petco, Waterloo Records at 6400 Lamar Blvd, and many others welcome furry friends in their shops. Hill Country Galleria also invites pooches inside their mall.
Next, you and your pup can bond and learn new tricks at doggie camp! The Canine Center for Training and Behavior offers many seminars, workshops, and other canine-related activities. Their wide range of facilities include training sites, specially prepared trails, a fully equipped agility field, behavior and consulting services, training programs, and activities in which you and your dog can bond. While all of these activities include safety tips and instructions, many emergency vet services are also available around the Austin area. Some of these include Austin Vet Emergency, Emergency Animal Hospital, and Animal Emergency Clinic of Central Texas.
Everything you and your pooch could need can be found in Austin. The capital of Texas welcomes many furry friends and continues to grow their love for pets. Austin not only leads in the job market, but also in the most dog-friendly city in the Lone Star state.
